Brief Biographical Sketch:

Hi! I'm a senior from Minneapolis, Minnesota finishing up a degree in religion with a certificate in French.

Victor Hugo has been one of my primary intellectual interests ever since I discovered his works at age 15. As the culmination of many years of amateur analysis of Hugo, I'm writing my senior thesis on the religious politics of Les Misérables. I'm also in the middle of a tangential project on "Lee's Miserables", the censored edition of the book that was very popular with Confederate soldiers. I'm very excited to be witnessing a surge in Hugo's popularity in the wake of the new Les Mis film and love to be a resource for people who want to learn more about his novels.

When not writing papers, I'm the captain of Princeton's synchronized figure skating team and a deacon in the University Chapel.

I intend to spend the next three years in NYC earning a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary.

H20: From Les Misérables to "Les Miz": Victor Hugo in His World and Ours in Splash Spring 13 (Apr. 27, 2013)
What's the history behind the hit musical "Les Miz"? What message was Victor Hugo trying to send with his massive 1862 novel, and how has that message been interpreted over the last 150 years? And what "revolution" is that barricade trying to depict, anyway? This lecture will introduce students to Victor Hugo's historical context and the political program of his greatest novel. After an overview of how his work has been adapted and re-adapted for stage and screen, students will have a chance to share their thoughts on why Les Misérables continues to speak to audiences around the world.
