S740: BIO 101: An Introduction to Cancer Biology: Understanding the Fundamentals of Cancer and its Development in Splash 2023 (Apr. 22, 2023)
This introductory course is designed to provide an introduction to the fundamental concepts and principles of cancer biology. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying tumor formation and progression, including the genetic and epigenetic changes that contribute to the development of cancer. Through lectures, interactive discussions, and case studies, students will explore the key hallmarks of cancer, such as uncontrolled growth and invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis. They will also learn about the various factors that influence cancer development, including environmental and lifestyle factors, as well as the role of the immune system in cancer surveillance and control. By the end of the course, students will have developed a solid foundation in cancer biology and be equipped with the knowledge necessary to explore more advanced topics in the field within academia. They will also have gained an appreciation for the complex nature of cancer and the ongoing research efforts in academic research aimed at understanding and treating this disease.
