M203: How to Keep Secrets: An introduction to secret codes and cryptography in Splash Spring 14 (Apr. 26, 2014)
We'll trace the development of secret code making and code breaking from the invention of secret codes in classical times to modern methods used to secure sensitive transactions, such as online banking. On the way, we'll learn some discrete mathematics and modular arithmetic. Specifically, we'll cover: -the Caesar cipher, along with enhancements like the Vigenère cipher -Unconditionally secure encryption and the "one time pad" -Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange -Public key cryptography and the RSA algorithm
