The word “Propaganda” has evolved to take on different meanings in various parts of society, often manifesting its powerful – and sometimes dangerous – influence in some of history’s most infamous moments. From the early oratory battles in Ancient Greek politics to unifying and destructive posters in the early wars of the 20th century, propaganda and its uses alter based on who creates it and in what context. While visually striking, its historical and modern forms hold layers of meaning in its carefully-curated details and slogans, designed to evoke certain emotions within its audience. We will learn how to design history by learning about the historical roots of propaganda, deconstructing famous pieces, and eventually creating our own works of art related to modern issues and movements.
