Z872: Designing History: The Art of Propaganda
Difficulty: **
Teachers: Elisa Y. Gonzalez

The word “Propaganda” has evolved to take on different meanings in various parts of society, often manifesting its powerful – and sometimes dangerous – influence in some of history’s most infamous moments. From the early oratory battles in Ancient Greek politics to unifying and destructive posters in the early wars of the 20th century, propaganda and its uses alter based on who creates it and in what context. While visually striking, its historical and modern forms hold layers of meaning in its carefully-curated details and slogans, designed to evoke certain emotions within its audience. We will learn how to design history by learning about the historical roots of propaganda, deconstructing famous pieces, and eventually creating our own works of art related to modern issues and movements.

Z884: Holy Ground: Examining the Relationship Between Christianity and Ecology

Is Christianity a justification for subduing land—or a call to care for creation? Guided by analysis of key texts, this seminar explores Biblical, theological, and Indigenous perspectives on ecology. Students will analyze texts like Genesis, Lynn White Jr.’s "The Historical Roots of Our Ecologic Crisis," Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass, and Pope Francis’s Laudato Si’. Through discussion and close reading, students will evaluate how Christian values affirm or complicate the modern environmental movement. This class fosters analytical skills in a supportive, low-stakes setting.

Prerequisites
All students are welcome, regardless of their faith background. Knowledge of Christian tradition or Indigenous traditions are not necessary to enjoy this course, and extensive guidance will be provided about how best to engage with the texts.
